Mamuju, West Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulbar) - Golkar Party general chairman Aburizal Bakrie has instructed the party`s legislative candidates to visit from one neighborhood to the other to reach out to people as part of a campaign for the April 9 legislative elections.
"If the heads of Golkar regional chapters visit three times a week, the legislative candidates must do it seven times a week. Remember that the general elections are only 54 days away," he said here on Saturday.
Golkar Party, which dominated the country`s politics during former president Soeharto`s era, finished second in the last general elections in 2009, beaten by current President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s Democrat Party.
Aburizal Bakrie, sometimes called by his acronym ARB, said the victory of a party was not merely about the percentage of votes won but more importantly about the number of parliamentary seats it could win.
"Golkar Party`s victory must be supported by the number of parliamentary seats won at district/city, provincial and national levels. Only if we could win a dominating number of seats in the parliament would we be able to declare that Golkar is victorious," he said.
So, actors who would determine the party`s victory are the legislative candidates themselves, he said.
"Legislative candidates are important actors who would determine their own victories at the elections. If they wish to win, they must go door-to-door. At the minimum, they must be among the people seven days a week," he said.
He told the party`s legislative candidates not to expect a win if they just sat and relaxed with their families and not meet the people.
He reminded again that Golkar`s victory is in the hands of board members from provincial to village levels.
"Provincial board members have an obligation to make their candidates win and so both the board members and candidates must communicate to win as many votes as possible in the next general elections," he said.
He said party board members must use all their existing potentials to win parliamentary seats.
"Mobilize all the forces of the organization to win votes at the elections," he said.
ARB has so far been named as the party`s presidential candidate. To support his candidacy, his party must be able to win a minimum of 20 per cent of parliamentary seats or 25 per cent of national votes to clear the parliamentary threshold.
If it fails to do so, the party would have to coalesce with other parties and would not be able to determine its own presidential candidate. ***1***
